Final Image

All done, Finally :)

Final Garment

As a group we have decided to take the picture on a white wall to go with the dress, we tried to enhance the look of the dress as much as possible even though, again, as a group, we would change the look of the dress. We firstly took pictures of the garment on a manikin.

Final Design Collaboration

Design Collaboration

We are producing a garment in groups and I am working with Nelly (http://neelampatelfashionforward.blogspot.com) and Sophie (http://sophiepiper.blogspot.com).

When collaborating our ideas we found that we all had a link with communications/miscommunications using hands, whether using brail, sign language or miscommunicating ideas.

Therefore we passed around ideas about have a touch sensitive garment which changes through interaction but due to short time we decided on pockets to symbolise the miscommunication as they are hidden but the shape of gloves so the vision of touch is still there.

Final Design Collection

From my initial designs, I have decided my strongest point is menswear so my final collection is just menswear. The design I most liked from my initial designs was the pleated shirt but i like the colours inspired by the wooden kinetic sculptures, therefore my final collection is based around pleats with colours inspired by wood.
Fabric Samples are to follow on a seperate Concept page, so the presentation is clear and concise.

Initial Design Pages

From my research I have produce 20 initial designs, each with their own inspiration, colour, fabric and shape. I will then chose the strongest piece/pieces to develop a range.

Research Development

Looking at communication for deaf people, I recognise that everything is visual and the messages need to be portrayed in a visual way.
But how would I translate my ideas of communication in to designs?

  • Movement

  • Sculpture

  • Expresions

  • Light

Influencial designers

To gain more design ideas, I am going to look at two influencial designers which link to my research well. The first being Issey miyake and the second Hussein Chalayan.

"Seashell" or "Shell-knit" coat, spring/summer 1985
                   Issey Miyake

This knitted coat reminds me a lot of the waves seen in the work by Reuben Margolin. The wave like textures is made my pleating and the bands of colour in the knit. The structure of it has the 'subtractive cutting' look which is architectually inspired. It is a very visual piece where the pleats and bands could help me influence my designs in portraying the message of a way to communicate the writing in my research.

Dress, ca. 1990
Issey Miyake

This dress has been given shape through two methods, pleating and cutting techniques. The colours and straps are very simple not distracting from the other assets. The shape made is very structured, not only by the actual dress but also with the lines made by pleating. When on a model the dress will move with the model making it look different which could in turn give a whole new look.
I think this is brilliant! The process of how all the material at the start of the performance is used to make garments and accesories shown on the models at the end. This could be a big influence in my design development, as it shows different ideas on how I can use movement to portray my message.

Subtraction Cutting workshop

Pattern cutting is normally associated with flat pattern pieces which are then sewn together, subtraction cutting isn't, it is more innovative and can create a different look every time it is done, shown in the last picture.

I found this process simple to follow and it creates really interesting shapes and I would like to look more in to it and experiment with it further. I feel at the moment this will be a strong influence in my designs. It reminds me of some of my favourite designers' work, including Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto.

Pictures of Kinetic Sculptures by Reuben Margolin

Reading about this video I found a link to his sight where I found pictures of his sculptures, the shapes made could act as a big influence on my design development.

Kinetic Sculptures

After watching this video I furthered my research looking through videos of different Kinetic Scluptors and found one video which really inspired me. It not only shows the sculpture but it shows the thought process and how it is made. This is Process Art shown through a video. The Sculptor is Reuben Margolin. Please ignore the last minute of the video...so random.

Theo Jansen - Kinetic Sculptor

Theo Jansen

Looking at how deaf people communicate, focused me in to wanting to look at movement more as deaf people are near enough dependent on movement for good communication. This reminded me of a video we viewed in our briefing by Theo Jansen, who is a Kinetic Sculptor.

The Idea of Language and Communication

After the briefing I was thinking of the type of communication I wanted to research further in to. During the briefing I was really inspired by art made by Cocky Eek, so I visited their website and found one project that I really enjoyed looking at, it was called Illumine.

Noctiluca miliaris

The transparency of the material used attracts the light to show the shape of object, also the surface it is on creates a reflection. Natural Light plays a big role in showing the art in its best way. The picture makes it look like there is no one around and is very quiet and serene.

balloon-dress 01

The light in this picture is positioned so it shines through the dress but also creating a dark silhouette of the model, this creates a certain edge and mood to the photo along with the shape of the dress. For me it feels awkward but again silent. The hand is very rigid, but the dress brings a certain softness to the pose along with the arched back.

kite costumn in the night

You can not see much of the object during the night, only a flash of pink and the light source. Without sound or more of the picture the location is unknown and also the scale of the object is, is it just one side of it or is the pink flash the outline of the whole object?  This picture creates a lot of mystery.

ice-whizz 02/2009 — luminous

This is my favourite out of all the pictures. I feel the openness of the picture, how the objects seems as its just gliding, and the reflection makes the picture have movement but placidity. The difference between the lightness of the 'ice-whizz' and the person carrying it and also the light and dark contrast between the sky and what is in the horizon makes for a contrasting mood.

balloondress 02

This is showing Process Art well, as the nine pictures each show a different pose, maybe only adjusting slightly from the last, which then results in how much light is shown. If one of these pictures just got displayed, each would have its own meaning created by the pose and the light. Again I can not picture any sound with this. When the pictures are all placed together like this there seems to be a fluid movement to it and the middle picture placed strategically to create light to the whole picture even though they are separate.

Looking at these pictures and how much light and shape can create a message and meaning, I'm going to focus my research on how deaf people communicate.
